Neocate Infant DHA & ARA Amino Acid Based Infant Formula with Iron FAQs
How should I prepare this product?
USE ONLY UNDER MEDICAL SUPERVISION. Your baby's health depends on carefully following the preparation, use and storage instructions. Failure to follow these instructions could result in severe harm. Proper hygiene is important when preparing infant formula.
We recommend cooled, boiled water for preparation and the use of sterilized bottles. Ask your baby's healthcare team if you need to use cooled, boiled water for mixing and if you need to boil (sterilize) bottles, nipples, and rings before use.
- Wash hands thoroughly and clean preparation area
- Pour the required amount of cooled, boiled water into a sterilized feeding bottle
- Add the prescribed number of scoops of Neocate Infant DHA/ARA to the water. (All scoops should be leveled and unpacked)
- Place the cap on the bottle and shake until the powder dissolves
*Boiling is the preferred method for sterilizing water, bottles, nipples and mixing utensils.
To make a standard dilution (20 kcal/fl oz), add 1 unpacked, level scoop (4.6 g) of powder to each fluid ounce of water. Only use the scoop provided
Amount of water | Amount of Neocate powder to add | Approximate final volume |
3 fl oz | 3 scoops or 13.8 g | 3.3 fl oz |
5 fl oz | 5 scoops or 23 g | 5.5 fl oz |
8 fl oz | 8 scoops or 36.8 g | 9 fl oz |
One can makes approx. 97 fl oz.
Do not boil formula and do not use a microwave oven to prepare or warm formula; serious burns may result. Formula dilution will vary depending on the age, body weight and medical condition of the infant. Neocate Infant DHA/ARA is suitable as a sole source of nutrition for infants under one year of age. For oral and tube feeding only; not for parenteral use.
Freshly prepared formula is best. Formula prepared in advance must be cooled rapidly, stored in the refrigerator and used within 24 hours of preparation. Discard formula left in bottle or cup 1 hour after feeding starts. Tube feeding hang time should not exceed 4 hours.
How should I store this product?
Store unopened can at room temperature. Do not store at extreme temperatures. Once opened, reseal can and store in a cool, dry place (not in a refrigerator). Use within 1 month.
What is an amino acid-based formula?
Amino acid-based formulas do not contain any intact protein chains and are made from the building blocks of protein, called amino acids.
How long does it take to see results with Neocate?
Every baby is different. Some parents have told us that they've noticed changes as soon as the first few days, but change can take time. Some research shows it can take that 2 weeks to see the full improvement in signs and symptoms of food allergy. Be sure to talk to your baby's healthcare team if you are unsure about any changes you see.
How can we transition to Neocate?
Generally, consensus guidelines and healthcare teams who work with infants suspected to have food allergies suggest staying on a new hypoallergenic formula for about 2 weeks. This allows time for your little one to adjust to the new formula. As you probably know by now, starting any new formula comes with a bit of a transition period. We have worked with a feeding specialist to provide helpful tips in transitioning to Neocate products.
How much Neocate does my child need?
If your little one is bottle fed, you can expect that he or she will probably consume about the same volume of Neocate Infant DHA/ARA as of the current formula or expressed breast milk. The amount of Neocate may increase or decrease a little bit, especially in the beginning. And over time, as your baby's calorie needs grow, the amount of Neocate per day will also grow. Once solids are introduced, they will gradually make up more of your baby's nutrition. Without being too specific, here are some general ranges for daily amounts of formula by age*. These ranges are for infants who are exclusively formula fed, and will be less for infants who take solid foods:
- 1 – 3 months: roughly 20 to 30 fluid ounces (fl oz)
- 4 – 6 months: roughly 24 to 34 fl oz
- 7 – 9 months: roughly 29 to 39 fl oz
- 10 – 12 months: roughly 34 to 44 fl oz
Will I see any changes in my baby's diapers?
A lot of parents tell us that they see a change in the color of bowel movements after they switch to Neocate Infant DHA/ARA. The color a lot of parents tell us they see is green. Yes, you read that right: green! It can range from a very dark green (think hunter green) to a "true" green (think forest green). Don't be alarmed, though. This is common for any amino acid-based infant formula, because of how it's digested and absorbed.
Is Neocate Infant DHA/ARA Kosher?
Neocate Infant DHA/ARA has been certified Kosher Pareve Non-Passover since late 2013.
Is Neocate Infant DHA/ARA Halal?
Neocate Infant DHA/ARA has been certified Halal since late 2013 by the Halal Food Council of Europe.
How long can I keep prepared Neocate Infant formula in the refrigerator?
The important thing to remember is that our recommendations help to make sure that Neocate stays fresh. Here's a breakdown of the times we recommend:
- 24 hours – This is the amount of time that prepared Neocate powdered formulas can stay in the fridge, IF you put them in right after mixing. If Neocate has been in the fridge longer than 24 hours, we recommend discarding.
- 4 hours – This is the amount of time that prepared Neocate powdered formulas can sit out at room temperature. This can be either after being freshly mixed, or after being removed from the fridge. If it’s been on the counter at room temperature longer than 4 hours, discard!
- 1 hour – This is the amount of time that Neocate can be kept after someone starts to drink it. Like it or not, our mouths are full of bacteria that just love nutrient-rich formulas like Neocate. Once your baby takes a drink, start the clock and discard what’s left after 1 hour. Safety first!
What temperature should the fridge be when storing Neocate?
For storing anything perishable (food, leftovers, prepared Neocate, you name it), a refrigerator should maintain a temperature below 40°F (4°C).
Did you know that some spots in your refrigerator are colder than others? It’s true! In general, the door is the warmest part of the fridge. The coldest parts can vary based on the layout of the fridge (i.e. where the freezer and ice maker are).
Want a surefire way to know if your fridge is cold enough? Take it’s temperature! Place a cup of water in the fridge, add a thermometer, and wait a few hours. You can even move it around to different parts of the fridge to see the differences – just make sure you give the water a few hours to adjust to the new “climate.”
Can you store Neocate frozen?
We don’t recommend it. Freezing temperatures (below 32°F, or 0°C) can affect some nutrient levels. Some vitamins just don’t hold up well under really cold temperatures, and home freezers can actually get very cold! Also, frozen Neocate that thaws may discolor and/or separate into different layers. We cannot guarantee nutrient content or quality of Neocate products when frozen, which is why we don’t recommend it.
Ask your healthcare team for advice before you prepare Neocate in any of these recipes, or any way other than as directed on the packaging or as we suggest above.
How do I ensure Neocate dissolves properly?
- Formula dissolves more easily in warm water. The warmest water you should use for Neocate Infant DHA/ARA is 122°F (50°C) to ensure the nutrient levels are not affected. (Water that temperature is pretty warm, but not uncomfortably hot is our best description.)
- DO NOT use boiling water to prepare Neocate powders.
- Stir or shake vigorously for the best solubility.
- You can try allowing formula freshly mixed to "rest" for a few minutes and then give it another vigorous stir or shake.
- If you still have trouble after trying the above tips, give us a call at 1.800.Neocate
Is cooled, boiled water absolutely required for mixing?
We are occasionally asked whether or not the cooled, boiled water (a.k.a. sterilized water) is a must when preparing Neocate Infant DHA/ARA. We suggest using sterile water for safety reasons, a recommendation that’s been made by several large healthcare professional groups (such as the American Academy of Pediatrics and Center for Disease Control and Prevention) in relation to the preparation of powdered infant formula.
For standard bottled waters or for tap water, you can easily sterilize the water by bringing it to a rolling boil for 2 minutes. You should then remove it from the heat and allow the water to cool for about 20-30 minutes to bring it down to a cooler temperature that would be safe for mixing with Neocate Infant DHA/ARA (below 122°F/50°C). This ensures it is not so hot that it affects nutrients in the formula. Neocate should never be mixed with boiling or recently boiled water.
For caregivers who prefer not to sterilize the water, we suggest checking with your little one’s healthcare team for their guidance.
