About Hudson RCI® Triflo® II Incentive Deep Breathing Exerciser
The Hudson RCI® Triflo® II Incentive Deep Breathing Exerciser is a scientifically designed respiratory therapy device intended to help adult and pediatric patients develop, improve, and maintain respiratory fitness through Slow Sustained Maximal Inspiration (SMI). Deep breathing exercises are critically important for patients recovering from surgery, illness, or prolonged bed rest, as normal breathing patterns during these periods are often shallow and suppressed to minimize pain — a pattern that, left unaddressed, can increase the risk of respiratory complications including pneumonia and atelectasis. The Triflo II encourages patients to take the deep, sustained breaths that their lungs need by providing immediate visual feedback through its three-chamber, three-ball design. As the patient inhales, the balls rise in the chambers to indicate flow rate — motivating deeper, more sustained breathing effort with each exercise. The corrugated tubing connecting the mouthpiece to the device is flexible and allows the patient to hold it comfortably in an upright position during use. For single patient use. Rx Only. Not made with natural rubber latex. Suitable for hospital and home care settings. Do not use the device for more than 10 days.
Key Benefits & Features
- Incentive Spirometry for Respiratory Recovery: The Triflo II is an incentive deep breathing exerciser designed to help patients perform Slow Sustained Maximal Inspiration (SMI) — a technique clinically recognized for helping prevent and manage respiratory complications such as pneumonia and atelectasis following surgery, prolonged illness, or bed rest.
- Three-Chamber Visual Feedback Design: Three chambers with color-coded balls provide immediate, motivating visual feedback during each breathing exercise. As the patient inhales, the balls rise in the chambers to indicate inspiratory flow rate — encouraging the patient to breathe deeper and longer with each effort.
- Wide Flow Rate Range — 200 to 1200 cc/Second: The Triflo II accommodates a wide range of respiratory capacity, from 200 cc/second (low flow) up to 1200 cc/second (high flow), making it appropriate for patients at varying stages of respiratory recovery and for both adult and pediatric users.
- Two Breathing Techniques Supported: For Slow Sustained Maximal Inspiration, the patient inhales slowly to raise the ball in the first chamber while the ball in the second chamber remains at rest. For Higher Flow Rate exercises, the patient inhales at a rate sufficient to raise the first and second balls simultaneously. The treating physician will direct which technique is appropriate.
- Corrugated Flexible Tubing and Adult Mouthpiece: The corrugated tubing provides flexible, comfortable reach between the mouthpiece and the device, allowing the patient to hold the exerciser in an upright position during use. The adult mouthpiece creates a secure seal for effective inspiratory effort.
- 5-Second Weight Hold Indicator: The device is designed to encourage patients to hold their inspiratory effort for several seconds to achieve Slow Sustained Maximal Inspiration — the deeper the breath and the longer it is sustained, the more effective the exercise at reopening collapsed lung segments.
- Single Patient Use and Easy to Clean: Designed for single patient, multi-use in a hospital or home care setting. Clean the mouthpiece regularly by diluting 1 mL of liquid dish washing detergent in 1 liter of warm tap water, immersing the mouthpiece, and soaking for approximately 5 minutes. Rinse thoroughly and inspect the corrugated tubing regularly to confirm it is clean. Do not use the device for more than 10 days.
- Not Made with Natural Rubber Latex: Safe for patients with latex sensitivities or allergies. Single patient use. Rx Only. Manufactured in Mexico for Medline Industries, LP.
Who Should Be Using This?
The Hudson RCI® Triflo® II is intended as an inspiratory deep breathing exerciser for adult and pediatric patients (above 1 year) in hospital or home care settings. It is typically prescribed following surgery, prolonged illness, or any condition that suppresses normal deep breathing patterns. Use only as directed by your physician or respiratory therapist. Rx Only — this device requires a prescription.
How Do You Use or Apply This Product?
- Remove the components from the package and attach the open end of the tubing to the stem in front of the exerciser. With the unit in an upright position, exhale normally and place your lips tightly around the mouthpiece.
- For Slow Sustained Maximal Inspiration (SMI): Inhale at a sufficient rate to raise the ball in the first chamber while the ball in the second chamber remains at rest.
- For a Higher Flow Rate: Inhale at a rate sufficient to raise the first and second balls, while the ball in the third chamber remains at rest.
- Exhale: After performing the exercise, remove the mouthpiece from your lips and exhale normally.
- Rest: Following each prolonged deep breath, take a moment to rest and breathe normally, then repeat as directed by your physician.
- Clean the mouthpiece regularly as described above and inspect the corrugated tubing to confirm it is clear and clean. Do not use the device for more than 10 days.
CAUTION/WARNING: Clean the mouthpiece with a non-irritating detergent. Rinse the mouthpiece and inner space under warm running tap water for a minimum of 1 minute or until all soap residue is removed. Always clean airspace using non-bristling wipes. Visually inspect the mouthpiece to ensure it is clean. Repeat cleaning steps if residue still is present. Connect the mouthpiece to the tubing. Visually inspect the corrugated tubing to ensure it is clean. Discard corrugated tubing if it is not clean. The device should not be used for more than 10 days.
