2025 Companion Caregiver Award Winner: Lori Millbauer

Caregiver: Lori Millbauer

She’s caring for: Her ex-husband, Mark

Winner of: Companion Caregiver Award

Last January, at 68 years of age, Lori’s ex-husband Mark received an ALS diagnosis. Before his diagnosis and quick onset of symptoms, Mark was a very healthy and active man, working in the auto repair industry, sailing on the Puget Sound and skiing on nearby mountains.

In just one year, ALS has taken away his ability to talk, walk, and do most anything. His hands are barely working, which is hard for him because working with his hands is what he has always loved to do.

Lori and Mark were married for 35 years and have been divorced for the past 10 years. During their time together they raised four children who are now well into adulthood. Lori kindly and graciously agreed to be his primary caregiver and support him, moving out of her home and into a home that is accessible for Mark’s wheelchair and other needs. Lori’s daughter states that the only positive to come of Mark’s ALS is bringing her parents back together.

The biggest challenge for everyone is Mark’s difficulty with communication. His mind is still active and sharp and he knows what he wants or needs but cannot effectively state them. He’s been able to use a typing device, but will soon begin learning an eye-gaze device as his hands decline.

There’s so much work that goes into caring for someone with ALS. Lori, nearly 70, assists Mark with showering, toileting, dressing, and feeding as well as assisting him throughout the night with his ventilator, adjusting his pillows, and helping him pull up sheets.

Lori’s daughter, who nominated her mom for this award, expressed gratitude for her mother’s willingness to help Mark out of the goodness of her heart. Without Lori’s willingness to serve as primary caregiver, her daughters would have needed to put him in a care facility.

It’s a beautiful example of love, sacrifice, and compassion. Thank you Lori for everything that you do!

Congratulations on winning this award!
