The holiday season is a time for joy and tradition, but for caregivers, it often brings a mix of financial strain, emotional stress, and logistical challenges. From managing caregiving expenses to protecting seniors from holiday scams, caregivers navigate a unique set of pressures during this time. Our survey of 1,000 caregivers sheds light on these experiences and offers insights to help families manage the season with more ease and support.

  • 3 in 5 feel guilty about not meeting their loved ones' holiday expectations.

  • Over 90% of report an increase in scams targeting seniors during the holidays.

  • 3 in 5 feel they neglect their own physical and mental health during the holidays.

  • 35% handle all caregiving duties alone without involving other family members.

The Financial and Emotional Costs of Holiday Caregiving

Caregiving during the holidays is an act of love, but it often comes with significant financial and emotional challenges. In this section, we explore the sacrifices caregivers make and the impact these duties can have on their well-being.

Caregivers spend an average of $300 out-of-pocket on holiday-related caregiving expenses, with Gen Z caregivers slightly outspending the average at $325. For 30% of caregivers, these costs exceeded $500, and 1 in 10 reported spending over $1,000.

To manage these expenses, 1 in 4 caregivers had taken on debt, averaging $500. Younger generations feel this strain acutely, with 17% of Gen Z caregivers going into debt to cover holiday caregiving costs.

Unfortunately, these expenses sometimes force caregivers to make difficult choices. About 17% have given up gift-giving entirely, while 14% didn't decorate in order to save money. Despite their best efforts, many caregivers feel stretched thin as they try to balance seasonal traditions with caregiving responsibilities.

Many caregivers felt guilty about not meeting holiday expectations for their loved ones, with 3 in 5 expressing this sentiment. Additionally, 1 in 2 faced emotional challenges tied to their caregiving roles. Financial strain further compounded this stress, with over half of caregivers reporting feelings of economic pressure due to holiday caregiving expenses.

Isolation is another significant challenge. Over a third of caregivers (35%) reported handling all holiday caregiving duties alone, including 33% of Gen Z caregivers. This lack of support left some caregivers feeling unappreciated: 1 in 4 Gen Z felt their efforts went unnoticed by their families, adding to the emotional toll of holiday caregiving.

Caregivers can lighten the load by reaching out to others for support and exploring community or government resources that offer assistance. Small steps like setting realistic expectations and focusing on meaningful, low-cost traditions can also help reduce stress while keeping the season joyful.

Protecting Seniors From Holiday Scams

The holiday season heightens risks for scams targeting seniors. Caregivers shared their concerns about these scams, their financial impact, and the most common methods scammers use to take advantage.

Nearly 3 in 4 caregivers expressed worry about scams targeting seniors during the holidays, a concern fueled by the fact that over 90% reported an increase in such scams during this time of year. Senior-targeted scams are not only pervasive but also costly — 1 in 5 seniors said they had lost $500 or more to holiday scams.

Scammers use a variety of channels to reach their victims. According to 57% of caregivers, phone calls topped the list of the most suspicious, followed by emails at 51%. Text messages were identified as a threat by 47% of respondents, while social media (28%) and pop-up ads (24%) also posed significant risks.

Caregivers can help protect seniors by educating them about common scam tactics, such as unsolicited calls or emails requesting personal information. Encouraging seniors to verify the legitimacy of any suspicious communication and using tools like call blockers or spam filters can also reduce the risk of falling victim to scams.

The Impact of Caregiving on Health and Holidays

Caregiving during the holidays often means prioritizing others' needs over one's own, but this selflessness can come at a cost. Caregivers frequently face challenges that affect their health, disrupt their work, and alter their holiday traditions.

Caregivers often struggled to prioritize their well-being during the holiday season, with 3 in 5 admitting they neglected their physical and mental health due to caregiving demands. This challenge was equally significant among Gen Z caregivers, with 3 in 5 feeling that their responsibilities negatively affected their well-being.

The demands of caregiving also impacted caregivers' professional lives, with nearly half saying that caregiving has disrupted their work commitments during the holiday season. For many, the stress became so overwhelming that about 60% avoided hosting holiday celebrations entirely.

To navigate these challenges, caregivers can prioritize small moments of self-care, such as taking short breaks, practicing mindfulness, or seeking support from friends and family. Sharing responsibilities with others, even for a few hours, can alleviate stress and create space for personal well-being.

Remember, caring for yourself is an essential part of being able to care for others effectively.

Balancing Holiday Joy and Caregiving Responsibilities

The holiday season is a time for connection and giving, but for caregivers, it also brings financial, emotional, and logistical hurdles. From out-of-pocket expenses to the emotional toll of caregiving, the challenges can feel overwhelming. However, small steps — like prioritizing self-care, seeking support, and scaling back on some traditions — can make a meaningful difference. By focusing on what matters most and leaning on available resources, caregivers can find moments of joy while continuing to provide the care their loved ones need.
